o   Begin Road to War: North vs. South  series

§  For this series students will work together in a group to understand:

·          What separated the North and the South economically, culturally, and politically?

·         What is the “States’ Rights” movement?

·         What political compromises held together the Union before the Civil War?

·         What incidents lead escaladed tensions between the North and South?

§  Students will work in a group to practice writing a compare and contrast essay on this topic

o   Road to War, Day 1: Differences between the North and South


§  Students work in assigned groups to compare economic, cultural, and political differences between the North and South in the early 1800s (Group Packet P1)

·         Tuesday & Wednesday

o   Quick Fire: In what ways was the conflict between the North and the South like feuding siblings? Why do you think this conflict was so hard to resolve? (Brief Intro PowerPoint )

o   Road to War, Day 2/3: Slavery, States Rights, and Compromise

  • Groups finish Missouri Compromise (Group Packet 1)
  • Students work in assigned groups to explore  slavery, states’ rights, and compromise between the North and South in the mid-1800s

·         Thursday

o   Quick fire: Describe a time when you had a disagreement with someone, only to later realize that it due to a misunderstanding or miscommunication.

o   Brief Intro PowerPoint

o   Road to War, Day 4: Incidents on the Road to War

  • Groups finish Missouri Compromise (Group Packet 1) 
  • Students will watch a segment of Civil War: The Causes (23:49-35:20) and construct a timeline which reflects to order of events that lead up to the Civil War.
  

·         Friday
  • Finish documentary segment
  • Each group will specialize in one incident that lead up to the war

    §  Each group will write an event summary

    §  Each group will contribute to the construction of a Road to War Timeline on the Promethean Board.
